About the Book
Here, deeply researched (with a fourteen-page References and Bibliography) and clearly presented are twenty-six separate stories with captioned photographs and topic-specific recipes.
One Peaceful Moment, An Alphabet of Stories about Food, Writing, Art, and the Quest for a Sense of Place, can be read from “A is for African Violet” to “Z is for Zest,” in the order in which the stories are alphabetically, though not chronologically, arranged; or the reader may wish to start with "K is for Kitten," in which the recipe for Fruit and Nut Tuna Fish Salad is interwoven with the illuminating narrative about the choices Ms. Solomon made as a young, single mother.
Each story is a complete encounter within itself, capturing a quietly observed and studied exploration (worked on for about fourteen years, as Ms. Solomon explains in the important-to-read A Note About This Book) of challenging ─ sometimes frightening ─ times of change, disillusionment, confusion, loneliness, and loss; and how, why, when, and for what reasons, moments of true nourishment arrive that hold within them the potential to inform, and therefore encourage and fortify, a way onward.
